Pinewood Derby
This is "Race Central" for Pack 214's Pinewood Derby and it is one of the most popular Pack events. Car kits are distributed
to all scouts at thier Den meetings. We usually host a race car workshop at the Eagle's Nest for boys and their Akela to fine tune
their cars. Equipment like bandsaws, electric sanders and a variety of other tools are available at the workshop to encourage
our Cub Scouts to do their best. Take a look a the Pack Calendar for this year's key dates.
Traditionally this is been a very competitive event, and rules and guidelines are closely monitored. Please be sure to adhere to the Offical Pack 214 Pinewood Derby guidelines.
For future Pack leaders running the race, here are the setup instructions.
The following is what you can expect on Race Day:
RACE DAY - Check-in (10:00-1:00)
- Cars will be checked for weight, length, width, clearance, BSA wheels and axles, etc. If ok, proceed. If not, return to owner to fix. Racers can check-in anytime between 10:00 and 1:00.
- Stickers will be applied to cars once they pass inspection.
- Limited onsite tools will be available for fine tuning cars if inspection fails.
- Cars will be sequestered to a holding area until race time.
RACE DAY - Start your engines (2:00-5:00)
- From this point forward cars are handled only by the adult leaders running the race.
- All result are electronically timed and results are displayed to the crowd. Excessive cheering is optional, however, good sportsmanship is mandatory!
- Top two finisher per den go on to the pack finals
- Lane assignments are random, except if there is a division run-off, in which case all four cars run on each of the four lanes
- If less than three cars are racing in a heat, the light bridge will be powered off and on to trip the sensors after the cars have crossed the finish the line (normal DT8000 timeout is 10 seconds).
Let's go racin'!
